This year St James’ Church Acton Trussell again took part in the Count on Nature, run by Caring for God’s Acre.
It was good to see new people from the community get involved in the count especially the children.
We noticed a difference from previous years as there were virtually no butterflies and few bees ( presumably because of the weather). But there were a huge number of molehills (200), one of them excitingly active at time of scrutiny. The local archaeological group (as the church is adjacent to a Roman settlement) have started to sift through some of the molehills to see what has been unearthed.
The deer (thought to be muntjac from their droppings) have unfortunately continued to nibble and break off branches of young trees.
Lavender and rosemary have been planted in a new herb garden as we believe these as not so attractive to the deer.
The wildflower garden is becoming more established.
We submitted a list of items spotted at St James’ Churchyard (and numbers) for entering on the National Database. Thanks to all who took part. Come along at any time to St James’ churchyard and enjoy peace and quiet and the wonders of nature.
